Philip Resnik

Philip Resnik is a linguistics professor with joint appointments in the Department of Linguistics and UMIACS. He also serves as associate director of the Computational Linguistics and Information Processing (CLIP) Lab.

Resnik's research focuses on combining knowledge-based and data-driven models in natural language processing and NLP-related machine learning, with applications in machine translation, computational social science, and computational psycholinguistics. He co-edited "The Balancing Act: Combining Symbolic and Statistical Approaches to Language" (MIT Press, 1996), and has published more than 100 journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. Resnik holds two patents, with a third in progress.

He has served on the editorial boards of Computational Linguistics, Cognition, Computers and the Humanities, Cognitive Linguistics, and Linguistics in Language Technology.

Outside of academia, Resnik was a technical co-founder of CodeRyte Inc., a clinical NLP provider acquired in April 2012 by 3M Health Information systems, and lead scientist for Converseon, a leading social media consultancy. He also founded React Labs, a startup that is commercializing a comprehensive real-time polling technology platform developed in connection with his research.

Resnik has also worked at R&D at Bolt Beranek and Newman, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, and Sun Microsystems Laboratories.

He received his bachelor's degree in computer science from Harvard University in 1987 and his doctorate in computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993.
