UMD, AOL Partner on Research and Innovation

Jun 27, 2013

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland and AOL, one of the world’s largest producers of digital content and a leader in advertising technology have, announced a partnership to explore areas of research and innovation that will prove beneficial to both parties.

The alliance, part of the university’s Corporate Partners in Computing Program, puts AOL researchers in touch with UMD faculty and students involved in social media analysis, software engineering, machine learning, mobile computing, artificial intelligence, parallel computing, visual analytics and more.

The partnership is hosted by the Department of Computer Science and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, where interdisciplinary teams use large-scale computing resources to tackle some of today’s most pressing scientific and societal problems.

“This is a great opportunity for students and faculty to get hands-on experience interacting with an absolute giant in the digital industry,” says Samir Khuller, chair of computer science at Maryland. “It gives our scientific community a front row seat in seeing what the latest trends and challenges are in the private sector,” he added.

In addition to latest member AOL, the Corporate Partners in Computing Program includes other technology leaders like Appian, Booz Allen Hamilton, Palantir, Dante Consulting, Carr Astronautics, Google and Yahoo.
”We are excited to partner with UMD on research and innovation,” says David Jacobs, senior vice president, Publisher Sales, AOL Networks. “As we continue to grow our Baltimore presence around a true center of excellence for ad technology, we look forward to working with one of the region’s most influential universities on this initiative.”
