"What is visualization really for?" by Min Chen - University of Oxford

Abstract:
Whenever a visualization researcher is asked about the purpose of visualization, the phrase “gaining insight” by and large pops out instinctively. In this talk, the speaker will present an argument that this may not be the appropriate answer for encompassing various uses of visualization in practice, nor offer much theoretical guidance to the advancement of this important technology. The speaker will draw evidence from a number of research projects, and will examine how a different answer may impact on the research directions in the future.
