Biography: 

Katie Shilton is an associate professor in the College of Information Studies (iSchool). Her research focuses on ethics and policy for the design of information technologies, systems, and collections.

Shilton leads the Ethics & Values in Design (EViD) Lab in the iSchool where her group examines topics like changing practices and emerging ethical norms among big data researchers, data subjects, and regulators to provide guidance for ethical use of pervasive data; characterizing and evaluating historical, ongoing, and emerging ethics governance projects within computer science; and engaging in the participatory design process with volunteer moderators to build machine learning tools to support healthier online communities, enable better working conditions for online moderators, and create more flexible software responses to community policies and norms.

She received her Ph.D. in information studies from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2011.
