De Floriani Is Named Eurographics Fellow

A University of Maryland expert in geospatial data visualization has been elected as a Fellow of Eurographics, a European-based professional association that advances research and scholarship in computer graphics and related fields such as multimedia, scientific visualization, and human-computer interaction.

Leila De Floriani, a professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, was one of three Eurographics members chosen as Fellows this year.

She was specifically recognized for her leadership and service to the fields of computer graphics and visualization, as well as for establishing a vibrant research community in her native Italy that is focused geometry and graphics.

De Floriani is a noted expert in geometric modeling and scientific visualization who has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications in data visualization, geospatial data representation and processing, computer graphics, geometric modeling, and shape analysis and understanding.

Her research has been funded by numerous national and international agencies, including the European Commission and the National Science Foundation. She has also held several different positions at academic and research institutions in the U.S. and Europe.
