Visualizing the Future of Healthcare

At the Newseum event, Amitabh Varshney, a professor of computer science and director of the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), and Dr. Sarah Murthi, an associate professor in the University of Maryland School of Medicine and trauma surgeon at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, discussed their use of augmented reality for viewing ultrasound data.

Another physician from Shock Trauma, critical care anesthesiologist Dr. Caron Hong, demonstrated the use of augmented reality to assist with inserting an intubation tube into a patient.

Initial funding for the research is from MPowering the State, a collaboration between the state of Maryland’s two most powerful public research institutions: the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park.
