Biography: 

Milijana Surbatovich is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and a core faculty member of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center. She is also a member of the Lab for Programming Languages at the University of Maryland.

Surbatovich’s research focuses on programming languages, formal methods and systems for emerging computing platforms. She aims to develop formal models and language abstractions that ensure correctness and security, enabling programmers to fully leverage these platforms while maintaining trustworthiness.

Surbatovich received her doctoral degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2023.

In 2021, she received the CyLab Presidential Fellowship from CMU. Surbatovich went on to win first place at the 2022 ACM SIGPLAN Conference on Programming Language Design and Implementation’s Student Research Competition for her work on a type system for reasoning about correct intermittent execution. Additionally, she was recognized as a 2022 Rising Star in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences by the University of Texas at Austin.
