Chitake Springs is ....

probably a place like no other! Being the sole source of water for thousands of animals in the peak heat of October for tens of miles makes it worth every effort to visit, and only a lucky few do. The spring is about 1 Mile long and 1-2 inches deep, most campsites are by the spring so one can view wildlife all day without moving... But really the major attraction here is that it is a 100% walking safari, in lion country....

We had wonderful time with the experienced guiding of Steve Pope. Not only did we approach lions on most walks, we watched an attempted hunting of a buffalo, and tracked the hunt on foot with 5 lions for a couple of hours.

We watched large size herds of buffalo (400+) at a time rushing to the Spring as well. The topography of the Spring lends itself to wonderful viewing as one can sit down under a tree, elevated from the Spring with unobstructed views of about half or more of the water-covered area.

Steve is conducting research on lions and hyenas, so we saw about 8-9 lions and 7 hyenas in the process,  had a quick glance of a leopard before it sneaked away, and watched the wonderful 5 lions on a tree during a beautiful African sun rise.
