This is a design for a Linear tourney. The idea was triggered by Jason's "4 periods" Age of Crusades tourney and the Brittania board game. In the Brittania board game turns are a century, and each player gets to play several tribes, invading England and defending against invasion, with tribes going in and out according to history. This is a tournament for four players. One is "basically" Irish, one English, one Scots, and one Roman/SRB/Welsh.
There are 10 rounds. In each round every player plays every other player exactly once with the army he gets that round. The army a player gets varies as time passes; in some cases a player must use more than one army in a given round. Rounds are as follows:
One special rule: the armies are fairly balanced against historical enemies. The Welsh player is perhaps slightly weaker, but then he plays the strong Roman armies in the first four rounds. To balance things out, however, the Viking armies (#106a) get a terrain disadvantage. Viking armies are twice as likely to be high roller. To implement this, simply make two challenges instead of one for a given period against a Viking opponent. If the non-Viking is low roller in either challenge, delete the other challenge and leave one where the non-Viking is low roller. If the Viking player is low roller in BOTH battles, delete one of them, and the Viking player gets to be low roller.
Note that one period, the Norman Invasion, is a little odd. During the Norman Invasion, every player gets to play Normans against one other player, and defends against a different player playing Normans against him. The Norman Invasion isn't a period on its own; victory points from battles during the Norman Invasion are cumulative with the 11th Century battles to determine an 11th Century winner.
In each period the player with the most victories in that period wins. Ties are resolved by element differential as usual (+2 for Gen/Camp). If two players tie in element differential, the one who was victorious in their sole face-to-face combat that round wins the period.
The overall winner is the player who wins the most individual periods. Ties (if any) will be resolved by most wins over all periods. If there is still a tie, it will be resolved by element differential over all battles. If there is still a tie after that, I'll have a cow.
Army element choices may be changed from battle to battle within the rules and the restrictions listed below for periods.
