Each member of the class must email their reactions on the current week's
reading each Sunday evening (by midnight) to: bonnie@umiacs.umd.edu, hwa@umiacs.umd.edu,
and the week's leaders.
Reactions on the first reading are due Feb 03.
-
The leader of the current week's reading should email a synopsis of all
submitted reactions to the class at language@umiacs.umd.edu by Tuesday
morning each week.
-
IMPORTANT: You should use the following guidelines for your weekly
reactions: By midnight each Sunday, you must submit a short commentary
(about 200 words) for the week's assigned reading(s). Your commentary should
address issues such as:
-
What are the problems that the papers are addressing?
-
What is the proposed approach? Do the ideas make sense?
-
How did they prove that their ideas work? Are the results significant?
Is their evaluation/proof fair/convincing?
-
How would you approach the problems (e.g., find an application for their
ideas, or extend their method, or propose an alternative method, or address
different aspects of the problem entirely)?
Other insights/questions inspired by the reading are also welcomed. For
instance, you are encouraged to do further readings on the topic (based
on the references the assigned papers provided, for example) and give additional
comments on these readings as well.
The bottom line is that we want a CONCISE account of your REACTION to
the readings. Please note that by concise, we do not mean sloppy or informal;
and that by reaction, we do not mean a summary of the paper.
