Reading List

In general, you have two readings per week for the first half of the class and one reading per week in the second half. The readings serve two important functions:
  1. To introduce you to the topics that we will discuss in the class, something that can only be done before the indicated week's class begins.
  2. To convey material in more detail than it is possible to discuss in class. 

Since the material in the readings is testable regardless of whether it is discussed directly in class, it would be a good idea to go back over the readings after class is over in order to ensure that you have understand the details that are related to the concepts we discussed in class.

Information technology is a rapidly changing field, and occasionally new readings become available (or come to my attention) that I would like to take advantage of. In these cases I will endeavor to replace a reading that is on this list with another at least two weeks in advance. On occasion I may choose instead to assign an additional reading if there is no existing reading for which the new one provides a reasonable substitute.

"Text" refers to the textbook: Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman and Misty E. Vermaat, Discovering Computers 2004: A Gateway to Information (ISBN: 0-7895-6704-0). If you have the 2003 version, check the book's Web site (http://www.scsite.com/dc2004/) to see what the assigned chapters cover, and then read the corresponding chapters in the 2003 book.
