Research Topics
Symmetric Alpha-Stable (SAS) modeling for noisy images:
SAS distributions are heavy-tailed statistical models for
describing impulsive noise. We have developed an image
segmentation algorithm using SAS and derived the optimal
statistical decision rule for detecting signals in impulsive noise.
FOPEN SAR Image Analysis:
The FOPEN SAR is a new sensor that can see through trees and detect
objects obscured by foliage. We have developed a detection algorithm
that is adaptive to clutter statistics and clutter types such as
trees, grass ,lakes, roads, etc.
Mammogram Image Analysis:
We have developed an adaptive algorithm to detect abnormalities in
breast tissue such as microcalcifications, lesions, and
masses. The approach uses SAS modeling and is able to discern
the fine structure and shape of the abnormalities.
Image Segmentation:
We derive a novel image segmentation algorithm by modifying
Polya's famous urn sampling scheme to model contagious behavior.
It is a type of genetic algorithm using temporal and spatial
contagion to produce a consistent and smooth segmentation map.
Super-resolution:
We have developed a new method for SAR super-resolution (SR) by
adapting Shekarforoush and Chellappa's method for video SR.
Using polarimetric SAR images, we use the theory of perfect
reconstuction filter banks to produce an image with
higher resolution and lower noise power.

Projects
Structure from Motion:
I implemented several SFM algorithms to determine the scene depth
(3D structure) from a moving video camera mounted on a robot
arm. These techniques are used for 3D model building, virtual
reality, and robot navigation.
Video Processing:
I implemented several methods for creating a panoramic view
from a video sequence (i.e. mosaicking). I also am working on
using optical flow for video editing - i.e. digitally removing a
person from a video, inserting virtual ads.
