Lead a Discussion
You will be asked to choose one class session during the first 8 weeks
where you will lead a portion of the discussion on policy issues (e.g.,
the digital divide, copyright freedoms, federally mandated assessment, etc.).
You will also be asked to contribute to the class readings with 4
additional links to documents that can add to the discussion. These links
need to be submitted by 9am the day of class so that they can be
incorporated into the class webpages. All discussions will be graded for
link content, discussion structure, and others' class participation in the
following form
Midterm Project & Presentation
You will be asked by your organization to adopt a new information technology for the children you
work with. Your organization may be a local school, a public library in a rural
area, a non-profit group working with children in developing countries, or any other
organization that connects children with technology. Choose a technology area we have
discussed in class and explain:
- why a technology might be important to intergrate into your organization's services for
children.
- give the pros and cons of adopting such a new technology.
- and propose an "adoption plan" that will give your organization an idea of what needs to
be done.
Be sure to use references in your discussion. All papers must be submitted by email 5:30pm,
Oct.29, the 9th class session. If it is not submitted on time that day, your grade
will be reduced by 5 points. For each subsequent day it is late your grade will be reduced by 5
points. You must also prepare a 7-minute presentation for the following week, Nov.5 . It
should
summarize the highlights of your technology adoption proposal. You will be graded on your paper's content
and structure, and your summary presentation in class. The following
form will be used.
Final Project & Presentation
During the second half of the semester, you will focus on one area of interest that
you believe needs further work. This includes suggesting:
- research to understand the impact that a particular government policy has on children's
use of information technology in libraries.
- the development and evaluation of a new technology for children.
- the study of how children are currently using a particular technology in the schools.
You will be responsible for developing a research proposal according to the National Science Foundation (NSF)
proposal guidelines . Deliverables are the following: a proposal which presents your
ideas and an in-class presentation. NOTE: All pieces of the final project must be submitted by email the last day of class,
Dec.10th at 3pm. You will be graded on your proposal's content and structure,
and your summary presentation in class. If it is not submitted on time that day, your grade
will be reduced by 5 points. For each subsequent day it is late your grade will be reduced by 5 points.
All final projects will be graded based on the following form.
