The Monastery Of Studenica

(near Kraljevo)
Three churches are now grouped together here:

The Church of the Virgin was founded by the originator of the powerful Serbian Nemanjich dynasty, Stefan Nemanja. He started building it soon after 1183. The building was finished, with its decorations, in 1208/9 under the supervision of his three sons, Sava, Stefan (later called "The First Crowned) and Vukan. The church has a single dome, a nave extending into vestibules and the facade is overlaid with richly carved marble. Its frescoes are in the monumental style.

The Church of Saint Joakim and Annwas founded by King Milutin. It was built in 1314, on a square ground plan, with a single dome, and frescoes in the narrative style. The Church of Saint Nicholas is a small single-naved building with extremely fine frescoes, although these ate now considerably impaired.

The most notable frescoes of Studenica are:

o The Crusiffixion

o Church Holidays

o Saint John the Baptist

o Women Incense-Bearers at Christ's Tomb
o The Presentation of The Virgin and The Nativity

o Saint Simeon Nemanja
