Lazarica
( Krushevac )
The church of Saint Stefan was founded by the Serbian ruler Prince Lazar
around 1375. It was ruined during the Turkish invasion (around 1413),
and remained neglected until the reign of Prince Milosh Obrenovich in the
nineteenth century, when it was restored. Some traces of frescoes remained.
It was built on a trefoil ground plan, with strongly accentuated vertical
lines. The facade has a red and white checkered pattern, with shallows, as
well as rosettes and ceramic ornamentation.
Lazarica is important because it breaks with the previous tradition of
Nemanjich church architecture.
