I was special issue co-editor for The VLDB Journal Special Issue on Data Management, Analysis and Mining for the Life Sciences in 2005.

I was co-Program Chair for the Second International Workshop on Data Integration for the Life Sciences (DILS 2005). The proceedings are available through the Springer Verlag LNBI series

In 2006, I will be co-Program Chair for the 14th Cooperative Information Systems CoopIS2006 Conference.

I co-chaired a Working Group (with Peter Buneman and Jeff Ullman) in 1996 on mediator data models and query languages, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation. I was an organizer of a Workshop on Data Management for Cellular and Molecular Biology sponsored by the NSF and the National Institutes of Health in 2003.

I am on the editorial board of ACM Computing Surveys and the INFORMS Journal of Computing. In the past, I have served on the board of the IEEE Transactions of Knowledge and Data Engineering.

I have served on the Program Committee of all the major database conferences (ACM Sigmod, VLDB and ICDE), the national conference on artificial intelligence (AAAI), the WWW Conference, IEEE Advances in Digital Libraries, and the International Conference on Information Systems.
