Biographical sketches for key personnel are given below. \end{verbatim} \newpage \begin{verbatim} Bonnie Dorr graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990 with a Ph.D. in computer science. She was a UMIACS postdoctoral researcher between 1990 and 1992 and is currently an assistant professor in the computer science department at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on large-scale interlingual machine translation (MT), i.e., automatic translation of diverse languages such as English, Spanish, Arabic, and Korean. She has developed a general framework for computerized translation of multiple languages. Her recent research focuses on the problem of automatic extraction of verb meanings from machine-readable resources for the construction of large-scale knowledge resources. Dr. Dorr received a NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowship (1996), Maryland's Distinguished Young Scientist Award (1996), the Alfred P. Sloan Research Award (1994), and a NSF Young Investigator Award (1993). She is the author of several published papers on natural language processing as well as a book on the lexicon in machine translation. She is chair of the AAAI Symposium Series, member of the ACL executive committee, and has served on several editorial boards and program committees. Amy Weinberg received her bachelor's degree with joint first class honours in Linguistics and Philosophy from McGill University in 1976, and her Ph.D in linguistics and philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988. She was hired by the department of linguistics at the University of Maryland as a lecturer in 1985, promoted to assistant professor in 1987, and to associate professor in 1992. Since 1989, she has held a joint appointment with the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) and she has been an affiliate associate professor with the University's Computer Science Department. She has also held visiting appointments at the University of Salzburg, Austria, and at the Universite de Quebec a Montreal. Her current research interests include syntactic modeling of human language, the development of psychologically verified models of human sentence processing, and the development of broad coverage, compact and efficient natural language systems to support computerized foreign language tutors. She has published a book and numerous articles on these topics. She is a member of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), and serves on numerous editorial boards. (Relevant Publications are listed in the Bibliography.) Mari Broman Olsen has been a postdoctoral researcher at UMIACS since 1996. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Linguistics and a B.A. in Linguistics (summa cum laude) from Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota. Her publications include a book on lexical and grammatical aspect (Garland Press, 1997) and an article with Bonnie Dorr in a Machine Translation special issue. Her research centers on the lexicon: developing, modifying and acquiring theoretically and empirically grounded lexical representations for NLP applications. Her current work (with Bonnie Dorr) includes revising and expanding the lexical representation (LCS database) to reflect properties of event structure that are both cross-linguistically relevant (for lexical choice) and syntactically realized (for generation), as well as corpus and experimental research (with Amy Weinberg) into how children acquire and associate the semantics of verbs with the morphological and syntactic contructions in which they appear. The results of the acquisition research may be applied to enhance automatic lexical acquisition. Finally, (with Philip Resnik) she is creating and using multilingual aligned texts to detect and model lexical and syntactic divergences that may be predicted from semantics and event structure, and using a semantic map (thesaurus-like lexicon) of the source language (Greek) as a pivot for creating scalable lexicons for other languages in which the texts are found. The results of the lexicon construction will be compared with the results of other automatic construction as well as used for languages which do not currently have a lexicon. Wade Shen is currently a Research Associate at the University of Maryland, College Park. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley (1994) where he was worked on Operating Systems issues as part of the TENET group. In 1997, he received a Master's of Computer Science from the University of Maryland researching issues in Natural Language Processing. His current research interests include statistical techniques in NLP, computational model of syntax, and lexical semantics. Two additional GRA's worked on this project---Kwan-Sup Kim and Terri Paik---particularly on the dictionaries for morphological and LCS processing. We have focused on several areas in support of our objectives: - Syntactic Analysis component for Korean military message corpus. - Morphological Analysis component for Korean military message corpus. - Semantic lexicon for Korean closed-class words (prepositions) and military open-class words. - Prototype system for semantic analysis of military messages. - Regularized Korean Military Message Corpus. Each of these will be discussed, in turn. 2 SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS COMPONENT FOR KOREAN MILITARY MESSAGE CORPUS We have investigated Korean syntax, at the level of grammatical constructions that arise in the corpus. Our syntactic analyzer---REAP (Right Edge Adjunction Parser)---is an enhanced version of one used in a previous version of the PRINCITRAN system; the parsing design was used first in the MILT Spanish/Arabic Foreign Language Tutor (Dorr et al. 1995, Weinberg et al. 1995) and has now been adapted to handle Korean and English. The parser is based on a Principles-and-Parameters approach (Chomsky 1981, adopted in work by Weinberg 1995a, Weinberg 1995b, and Weinberg et al. 1995). This approach provides construction-independent formulae that are grouped into interacting modules which are parameterized. By modifying them to a small degree, one can generate the patterns associated with a variety of languages: each language corresponding to a parameter setting for various modules across a range of constructions. This "interlingual" view is a rather radical change from previous formalisms for language analyzers. Normal practice in their development involves the construction of a language particular set of rules that work on a construction by construction basis to match prestored grammar patterns to particular inputs. These pattern matching architectures are deficient for two reasons. First, they cannot apply to languages with different typologies. For example, a rule for a word order sensitive language like English which places the subject argument strictly before the verb which appears strictly before the object argument is irrelevant to a word order insensitive language like Korean, where a noun in any order before the verb can bear the subject or object role as long as that argument bears an appropriate case marking particle. Moreover, the construction-by-construction approach makes translation systems brittle in that inputs must match stored patterns exactly. REAP is an extremely efficient deterministic parser for natural human languages. This parser is based on a model of the human language processor (HLP) that allows it to be both fast and cover a variety of actual languages. For instance, systems have been developed for Arabic, Spanish, and English using this parser and the Korean system has now been developed for the military corpus. This range of languages presents a number of problems for any theory of parsing, but the current parser handles these problems with ease, and achieves parsing speeds in excess of 100 words per second. These results are the consequence of designing a parsing algorithm that mimics the HLP, and thereby exploits the same characteristics of the input signal that allow the HLP to parse in linear time. The REAP Parsing algorithm consists of two steps, applied iteratively to each lexical constituent that is encountered: a) The item is placed in the tree by the syntactic processor at the "best" site using Right-Edge Adjunction, and b) Isomorphic operations are performed by the constraint processor on the resulting tree. REAP has been adapted to Korean, producing parse-tree representations for the following phenomena: 2.1 Simple declarative sentences with scrambling: Examples: John-nom mary-acc verb Mary-acc john-nom verb To handle basic sentences, rules were first generated for simple noun phrases. Verb phrase rules were then generated to accept VP internal scrambling. The current grammar contains rules to handle the attachment of case marked noun phrases licensed by intransitive, transitive, and ditransitive verbs. Rules of this sort will also enable embedded CP structures and relative clauses. We have developed two morphology lexicons for sentences in a military message corpus. "c.lex" contains the words exactly as they appear in the surface sentence, and "k.lex" contains all the roots of the entries in c.lex. (The "k" stands for Kimmo.) "k.lex" also contains additional morphemes---case markers, tense/aspect/mood markers, prepositions, conjunctions, and "untranslatables"---that have semantic value but are not root entries because they are suffixes. Consider the word "[al.lye tal.la]" in the following corpus sentence: Korean: [hyen.cay.uy] [wi.chi.wa] [i.tong pang.hyang] [ku.li.ko] [i.tong.sok.to.lul] [al.lye tal.la]. English: SEND PRESENT LOCATION AND DIRECTION AND SPEED OF MOVEMENT, IF ANY. The word "al.lye tal.la" is derived from the root form "al.li", which means "make known", "tell", or "inform". The morpheme ".la" is the imperative marker. However, "tal" is difficult to represent. When "tal" appears in a verb, it carries the meaning of "for me/us" or "to me/us". It is only used in a very limited context. This is stored as a morphological constituent in the lexicon---but it has no category (i.e., a functional element). The k.lex file is used directly by the PC-KIMMO two-level processor which runs on the PC, Mac, and Sun. (See Karttunen and Wittenburg (1983) and Antworth (1990) for complete details.) This PC version of the program is named after its inventor Kimmo Koskenniemi. Appendix A contains this more succinct version of the morphology lexicon. Note that all open-class and closed-class items are included in this lexicon. The Morphology Rules that are used by Kimmo in conjunction with this lexicon are described in sections 2.2.1-3 below. This is called resyllabification. The rules specified above illustrate the contexts in which we need to resyllabify or delete the boundary. 4 SEMANTIC LEXICON FOR KOREAN The largest set of open-class words that were defined in the semantic lexicon were Korean verbs. All of the Korean verbs from the corpus were grouped into classes based on the work of (Levin 1993)---class numbers 9.1 through 57. In addition, we have added some semantic classes---class numbers 001-026---to accommodate meanings that are not covered by Levin's classes. Appendix C contains these definitions. 5 SYNTACTIC AND SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF MILITARY MESSAGE CORPUS We have developed analysis routines that produce syntactic parse-tree output that is then converted into the LCS representation. Sample parse-tree and LCS outputs for five sample sentences from the military message corpus are given in Appendix D. To create Composed LCS structures: The function parse-compose create a LCS from a Korean sentence. This function parses an input sentence and then composes it to return an appropriate LCS structure. To create parse trees for sentences: The function parse creates a parse tree from a Korean sentence. This function is called with a sentence and its language as arguments. The full set of instructions for the SBIR Phase I system are in Appendix E. 6 REGULARIZED KOREAN MILITARY MESSAGE CORPUS We are using a Military Message Corpus---a Korean translation of an English Corpus (with aligned sentences included)---collected and translated by researchers at the University of Maryland in 1993 (see UMIACS TR 94-26, CS TR 3233). We have regularized this lexicon, providing morpheme boundaries, and using a dot notation that feeds into our Hangul generation program produced by researchers at the University of Maryland in 1994 (see UMIACS TR 95-16, CS TR 3412, 1995). The entire corpus is given in a previous technical report as is the accompanying Korean dictionary (see UMIACS TR, CS TR, 1996). Appendix F contains the regularized Korean military corpus.
