Artificial Intelligence research atUMIACS

Artificial Intelligence (AI) research at UMIACS ranges from theoretical investigations to simulations and practical applications. It is a highly interdisciplinary program with faculty from Computer Science, Philosophy, Business and Management, and Electrical Engineering.

Logic and Artificial Intelligence:
Research here stresses issues that intersect philisophical logic and artificial intelligence, focusing especially on modal and nonmonotonic logics and their applications to the formalization of common sense reasoning.

Natural Language Processing and Machine Translation:
Research is being conducted on the development of theories and tools to translate between alternative natural languages such as Arabic, Korean, Japanese, and French, using a unified approach for which parameters may be adjusted.

Robotics, Planning and Neural Networks:
Developing autonomous robots is an important application of AI. Tools are being developed to permit robots to plan their strategies in solving complicated tasks. Novel neural network architectures have been designed to handle computational tasks in planning.

Computational Linguistics and Information Processing Lab:
Investigating high performance automatic information filtering techniques for casual users and investigating techniques for interoperable query processing with multiple heterogeneous knowledge servers.
