The tribal region in the Afghan-Pakistani borderlands has been a very
prominent area in recent international affiars. Because of the extensive
interest in this part of the world, the tribal border regions have presented
themselves as a natural testbed for developing and applying some of the LCCD
tools.
With the aid of STORY, V.S.
Subrahmanian and his students were able to
provide the Army's 10th Mountain Division with information regarding the
history, politics, and culture of several Afghan tribal groups: Pashtuns,
Shinwari, Mohmand, Waziri, Uthman Khel, and Mangal. This information was
used by the Army before their deployment to Afghanistan in 2006.
Using the information we have compiled about Afghan tribes, we are building a
set of agent models representing various tribal actors, i.e. religious leaders,
civil leaders, warlords, etc. These agents will be composed of rules expressed
in the SOMA language, and the reasoning mechanisms will
be implemented with the SOMA maximally probable
worlds algorithms. Ultimately, these agents will
comprise the decision-making backbone for a tribal region scenario in the
CAGE system.
