A demo version of the COPI, developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics, will be presented. The COPI is a self-administering, semi-adaptive computer-based oral proficiency assessment that presents global speaking tasks to the candidate. Tasks are developed to elicit speech performances ratable using the Speaking Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The program includes a preliminary self-assessment and draws tasks from an underlying task pool based on examinee input. This allows the candidate some choice in the tasks and topics that must be responded to. The demo is in English with German examples. Discussion will focus on the human-computer inface and potential of applying computerized tools to the scoring of test tasks.
