Computational Linguistics Colloquium

September 1, 2003, 11:00am, AVW Room 2120

In this talk, I will reflect on some of the high points of my sabbatical year in the Natural Language Group at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute.  I'll briefly mention a number of things that I worked on, and then I'll focus for the remainder of the talk on four specific projects: (1) cross-language question answering, (2) automatic mediation for access to recorded interviews, (3) machine translation for Cebuano and Hindi, and (4) access to archival collections of electronic mail.  I'll describe the genesis and current state of each project, and will remark on how what I have learned in each might influence our work here at Maryland.  The talk won't be all serious, though; along the way, I may throw in a few stories about how life on the left coast altered my understanding of the human condition.
