Atif Memon, a professor of computer science with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), has received the Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation and the Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research.

The prestigious award—valued at more than $50,000—is given each year to no more than three scientists from non-European countries.

“Atif’s work in software testing and software engineering is exceptional. He is a valued colleague and an inspiration to our entire research community,” says Amitabh Varshney, professor of computer science and director of UMIACS.

Recipients of the Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award must have completed their doctorates less than 18 years ago, must be internationally recognized for their achievements in the field of applied research, and are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements that have a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work.

Memon will use his award to collaborate on a long-term research project in model-based software testing with the UMD-affiliated Fraunhofer Center for Experimental Software Engineering and with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering.
